Mark 9:2-7
The Transfiguration
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!”
We fear change
because, once it begins,
it’s hard to control
And so we settle for less
rather than experience the discomfort
of not knowing where it might all end.
When we get out of our depth
we want to nail things down,
contain them in a familiar form
and set about bringing a semblance of order.
We are self-limiting creatures
with a limitless God
whose love is a bottomless cup
filled to overflowing.
What if we let ourselves be swept away
by the tide of transformation
Not simply to see where it takes us
but to enjoy the ride
caught up in the ebb and flow
carried along on a wave of insight
that roots and grounds us
from the inside out
in the unfathomable love and power of God
