Called to keep on showing up.

Luke 23:46-49
Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last. When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, “Certainly this man was innocent.” And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

How often our calling
is not what we imagine
not the drama
we may have envisaged
not the obvious
or even the logical
but, simply,
the most effective
 - to show up.
To show up
and to keep showing up
to bear witness
to all that we do not understand
to all that we cannot change
to heartbreak
and anguish
To show up
even
and especially
when we feel impotent
Because in every trial
(and in every joy)
God relies on those
who show up
those who bring all of themselves
to all of the moment
Those who will bear witness
Those who will not turn away
Those who will stand alongside
Those whose vulnerability
is laid bare for others
Those who risk
and in the risking
invite possibility
which begins
with showing up.
