Looking forward

Jeremiah 7:23-24
But this command I gave them, “Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk only in the way that I command you, so that it may be well with you.” Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but, in the stubbornness of their evil will, they walked in their own counsels, and looked backward rather than forward.

Looking back is tempting
There are lessons to be learned from the past
There is wisdom in the way
of those who have gone before
Yet our God calls us
to listen to the voice of God
today
A voice that speaks anew
into each generation
and every culture
A voice that calls us out
to new people and places
to new ways of being
Ways that allow us
to hear God
amidst the clamour
of social media
in the very melee
of our connectedness
Ways that allow us
to seek out
those who are disconnected
for whom access is denied
to the myriad routes
of belonging
In the noise today
God calls us
to listen for those who are silent
to search out those voices
that are not heard
to follow God
into new ways of being
new ways of connectedness
with God and our neighbour
Looking forward
in order to glimpse
God dwelling with us
Today.
