Embracing wilderness

 Mark 1:12

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.

In the wilderness

Empty-handed

Devoid of the resources normally relied on

Vulnerable to the whims of nature

What is lying dormant

ready to flourish?

What is hidden

that might come to light?

What surprises are waiting

to illuminate our path?

In vulnerability

there is an invitation

to be courageous

to welcome whatever is offered

with the spirit of curiosity and wonder

and, in our openness

there is the possibility

of transformation.

Where might we experience wilderness today?

A part to play

 Mark 1:2-3

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,

“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your way;

the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:

‘Prepare the way of the Lord,

make his paths straight,’ ”

Fore runners

Unsung heroes

doing what is needed

before getting out of the way

Occasionally out in front

More often, in the background

Heralds of the future

Sentinels of the present

Finding fulfilment in the knowledge

that the trail they blaze

makes all the difference in the world

Playing a vital part

in an unknown, unpredictable future

The beginning of the good news
